Good to Know

Toxins, Tips, and Trusted Links

The details our clients ask about most.

What foods and household items are toxic to pets?

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and macadamia nuts top the list for dogs and cats. Around the house, watch for antifreeze, de-icing salts, and rodenticides. Lilies are especially dangerous for cats, and aerosol sprays, cleaners, and fumes from nonstick cookware or self-cleaning ovens are dangerous for birds. Call us if your pet gets into something.

Do you have heartworm in Bayfield?

Yes — we DO have heartworm in Bayfield. The American Heartworm Society is a trusted resource for more information, and we're happy to talk through prevention at your pet's next visit.

What's a healthy weight for my pet?

We use a Body Condition Score (BCS) to help your pet reach a healthy weight — we aim for a 5 out of 9.

Any tips for giving my pet medication?

For cats, try hiding pills in a treat or using a pill pocket. For dogs recovering from surgery, a stuffed Kong (peanut butter, softened kibble, baby food without onion or garlic, plain yogurt, or cheese whiz, then frozen) helps pass the 2 weeks of rest comfortably.

What's your go-to skunk recipe?

1 teaspoon Dawn dish soap, 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, and 1/2 cup baking soda. Mix and use right away.

Where can I find trusted outside resources?

We recommend Veterinary Partner, the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 886-7965, the Veterinary Oral Health Council, the American Heartworm Society, and Care Credit for payment assistance.
